Bernardo Silva Shares Insights on Ballon d'Or Criteria and Football Statistics
In a recent interview with Portuguese media outlet "O Jogo," Bernardo Silva discussed the Ballon d'Or selection criteria and the increasing focus on statistics in football.
Silva stated, "When it comes to individual awards nowadays, people pay a lot of attention to statistics. Usually, the player with the most goals wins... If Bayern wins the Champions League, the Bayern forward who scores 40 goals this season will get the Ballon d'Or. If Manchester City wins... coincidentally, it won't be Haaland because Messi won the World Cup. However, without the World Cup, Haaland would win the Ballon d'Or."
He added, "Usually, the top scorer ends up winning individual awards. Do I agree? Honestly, not necessarily. But they just manage to win because, at times, they are even the most impactful. Nowadays, I don't agree that only goal-scorers can win the Ballon d'Or, but that's how football operates."
The Portuguese footballer also reflected on the value of statistical data, pointing out that people now prioritize numbers over on-field events. He said, "Stats don't mean much... I like to see statistics of players winning games. I want to see which players have the highest win rates in the Champions League or the Premier League because a player's impact on the team doesn't solely depend on goals or assists."
"Our football has reached a point of exaggeration, where a midfielder scoring 20 goals is considered better than one scoring 10, which might be true, but it's not always the case because there are many ways to play. You have to look at the game as a whole, not just the numbers, because players have different characteristics," Silva emphasized.
Erling Haaland began his professional career with his hometown team Molde before moving to Brann. In 2017, he joined Borussia Dortmund's youth academy and was promoted to the first team in 2019. His outstanding performances at Dortmund established him as one of the team's key forwards.
