The NBA trade deadline is Thursday

The NBA trade deadline is on Thursday, with contenders making final adjustments to their rosters ahead of intense playoff races in each division.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday

While this week is important for the entire league every year, this season brings new constraints for management. It's the first trading season since the league and the National Basketball Players Association approved the current collective bargaining agreement last spring, and it's the last trade deadline before strict spending controls take full effect this summer.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday

With over 20 teams still vying for playoff spots, there are storylines to analyze regarding changes in rankings until 3 p.m. ET on Thursday. Max: Teams that must be on the second runway next season — or are expected to be on the second runway. After Damian Lillard was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in September, a Western Conference executive joked to me that the high spending reminded him of going to a buffet an hour before closing.

This comment was in response to major moves by the Bucks and the Boston Celtics, who acquired guard Jalen Horford days after the Lillard trade and have since implemented a series of strict roster and trade restrictions starting this offseason. The impending rules are why heavy trades by the Celtics, Bucks, Phoenix Suns (acquiring Bradley Beal in June), and Los Angeles Clippers (acquiring James Harden in October) are unlikely. Under the new rules, neither of these two trades, nor the Bucks' and Celtics' trades, would be allowed.

The 2024-25 season: the Bucks, Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Phoenix Suns. (The Memphis Grizzlies were expected to be on the second runway before trading Steven Adams to the Houston Rockets.)
