French referee Tielpan earned €260,000 during the 2022-2023 season

French referee Tielpan earned €260,000 during the 2022-2023 season

According to L'Equipe, French referee Tielpan earned €260,000 (approximately ¥2.04 million) during the 2022-2023 season, which, although significantly lower than top-league players, remains among the highest in French football refereeing.

Previously, Tielpan officiated the 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League final (Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool) and the 2020-2021 UEFA Europa League final (Villarreal 1-1 Manchester United, 11-10 on penalties). Statistics show that he officiated 39 matches last season, including 21 Ligue 1 games, 1 Ligue 2 game, 2 French Cup matches, 6 Champions League matches, 1 play-off match, 1 Europa League match, and 5 international matches, as well as two matches in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, he served as a VAR referee six times in French matches.

Last season, Tielpan received a monthly preparation allowance of €6,894 and an additional €2,000 monthly as an "elite referee" from UEFA. His bonuses for refereeing a Ligue 1 match amounted to €3,214, €1,680 for a Ligue 2 match, and €1,000 for being a VAR referee. He also received a daily travel allowance of €180 during matches.

His income from officiating European matches was more substantial, with €5,000 per match, rising to €6,000 for UEFA Champions League or Europa League quarter-finals and subsequent matches, along with a daily allowance of €200.

This season, if Tielpan's workload remains similar to last season's, his total income is likely to increase. With the European Championship approaching, his professional refereeing skills should earn him a place among Europe's elite referees. It is reported that each referee in the European Championship will receive a match fee of €10,000.

According to L'Equipe, French referees' monthly remuneration consists of three parts: a fixed salary, match bonuses and allowances, and additional compensation for those designated as "elite referees."

The expenses for French referees are covered by the French Professional Football League (LFP), which annually pays the total amount of referees' remuneration to the French Football Federation. Federal agencies then distribute salaries to each referee according to the contract framework. With the competence and judgment of referees often being questioned in football matches, training programs and salary levels for referees are gradually being given more attention.
