Mason Greenwood £26m Manchester United exit 'on hold' after French mayor gets involved
Marseille have had a bid accepted for Mason Greenwood but that move is now on the verge of collapsing with the French outfit considering a move for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah instead
Mason Greenwood's Manchester United's exit to Marseille is currently in doubt.
The 22-year-old has returned to Carrington after spending last season out on loan at Getafe. He held talks with United officials at the training ground but did not train with the first-team players on the first day of pre-season.
Despite impressing in La Liga, Greenwood has been told he has no future at Old Trafford and United chiefs have been in talks with other clubs to find a solution. Following positive talks with Marseille, United accepted a bid of £26million but the move was said to be dependant on the forward agreeing personal terms with the Ligue 1 club.
However, a potential move has now reportedly been put on hold and is in danger of collapsing. Greenwood was previously charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault, before all charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.
In an online fan forum, Marseille supporters have shown their disapproval at the prospect of the forward joining the French outfit. The mayor of Marseille Benoit Payan then also had his say and strongly criticised the move.
he expressed his disapproval of Greenwood joining Roberto De Zerbi's team, stating that he did not want his club 'covered in shame' and deeming it 'unacceptable'.
With that said, Marseille appear to have set their sights on Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah. Reports claim that the Gunners had been approached by the French side after a transfer dispute in the over the potential signing of Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022 when he was suspended by the club following his arrest for attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The case against Greenwood was discontinued when the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew all charges just over a year later.
