Alperen Sengun has signed a 5-year, $185 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets
According to NBA reporter Bobby Marks, Alperen Şengün has signed a 5-year, $185 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets, with the final year being a player option.
Şengün's extension makes him the first player to sign a 5-year rookie extension with a player option since Luka Dončić and Trae Young. The 22-year-old made significant progress last season and finished third in the Most Improved Player voting. Before being sidelined for the 2023-24 season due to an ankle injury, he averaged 21.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5 assists per game.
He is one of only six players last season to average at least 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists, joining the likes of Dončić, Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, and Julius Randle.
Şengün was selected 16th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2021 NBA Draft, with that pick originally belonging to the Boston Celtics as part of the trade that sent Kemba Walker to the Thunder in exchange for Al Horford. He was then immediately traded to the Rockets.
He, along with Jalen Green, represents the Rockets' long-term commitments from the 2021 draft class. Green also signed a three-year, $106 million contract.
