Cumbrian goalkeeper Trafford called into England squad
Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford has been called up to the full England squad for the first time.

The 21-year-old has been drafted in to Gareth Southgate's Three Lions squad ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Belgium.

Trafford has stepped up from the Under-21 squad to join the senior England ranks after an injury to Sam Johnstone.

It means there are now two young Cumbrians in Southgate's squad with defender Jarrad Branthwaite also in the ranks.

The call-up for Burnley keeper Trafford, from Greysouthen, is another huge milestone in his promising career.

The former Carlisle United academy player has until recently been first-choice in the Premier League this season with Vincent Kompany's Burnley, having joined the Clarets from Manchester City last summer.

Both Trafford and Branthwaite, from Wigton, were in the Under-21 squad that won the Euros last summer, the keeper starring with a run of clean sheets and then a dramatic penalty save in the final against Spain.

Now the duo will be involved in the senior squad at Wembley in England's second game in four days as they build up to this summer's Euros in Germany.

Branthwaite was an unused substitute in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Brazil and will be hoping to make his debut against Belgium.

Trafford, meanwhile, can now look forward to a place on the bench, his call-up confirming his status as one of the top young keepers in the country.

Manchester City's Rico Lewis has also stepped up from the Under-21 squad and both he and Trafford will report to Tottenham Hotspur's training ground after the withdrawals of Johnstone, Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker through injury.
